Immersion Experiences
Ven a Ver DC is an immersion into the reality of social injustice and political advocacy. Students will travel to Washington D.C. to participate in the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice with other high school and college students from across the country. Students will hear from experts and theologians about our responsibility to respond to the needs of our time. Students will have the opportunity to advocate for justice by going to the Capitol and talking with elected congresspersons. The goal is for students to understand that faith and justice are intricately linked and to experience a personal conversion toward living a life of advocacy for and solidarity with the poor and marginalized in our world.
This immersion typically occurs in the fall semester.
Cost to participate: $800. Financial aid is available. Juniors and seniors may apply.
Ven a Ver Borderlands is an immersion into the reality of the US/Mexico border and immigration. We will travel to Tucson, Arizona and participate in a delegation with Borderlinks, an organization devoted to educating communities on immigration. Possible activities on this immersion include: meeting with humanitarian organizations providing aid to migrants, hiking in the desert to the border, and participating in workshops that provide a window to the everyday life of a migrant. The goal of this immersion is for students to have a personal encounter with the border, while looking through the lens of faith, in order to have an informed opinion about immigration. There will also be an opportunity for us to connect with the CSJ sisters currently in Tucson.
This immersion typically occurs in the spring semester.
Cost to participate: $800. Financial aid is available. Juniors and seniors may apply.
Ven a Ver Sustainable Farming is an immersion into the reality of farming and farmworkers. Students will learn about the issues farmworkers face locally and globally. We will explore themes such as care for creation, migration, and sustainable farming. We hope this encounter will enhance understanding of the Catholic Social Teaching concepts of Human Dignity, Solidarity, and the Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers.
This immersion typically occurs in the spring semester.
Cost to participate: $400. Financial aid is available. Freshmen and sophomores may apply.
Frosh Day of Service is a special day when the entire freshman class engages in the Carondelet tradition of serving our dear neighbor. Our Carondelet students are known for their generous service to the wider community. On this day, frosh students will serve a local non-profit in order to address a local/global need. Students are also supported in reflecting on how they imagine continuing to serve in the community. This event typically occurs in October.
Junior Immersion is a field trip that is scheduled in conjunction with Junior religion classes. This immersion gives juniors the opportunity to learn about the experience of homelessness in the Bay Area. Students will participate in direct service with a local organization that serves the marginalized. Most importantly, students have the opportunity to interact with the poor and to recognize their God-giving human dignity. Students will participate in this immersion through their Symbols and Ethics classes in the fall semester and will be absent from regular classes for the day of their trip.
