Hunger—a plight that affects nearly 821 million people globally—continues to be one of the most urgent humanitarian crises. Every night, one in nine people go to bed on an empty stomach, and sadly, a significant number of them are children. This year’s Lenten Project, called “Ashes to Abundance,” embodies the Lenten principles of sacrifice, solidarity, and charity with those who face hunger. Our project aims to raise awareness and engage in efforts to alleviate hunger locally and globally. This Lent, may we journey from the ashes of hunger to the abundance of shared compassion and sustenance.
Local Hunger
Our school will host a Food Drive for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. For the first four weeks of Lent, we will be collecting non-perishable foods. There will also be a friendly grade level competition to see which grade can collect the most food each week.
Over four weeks, we will be collecting:
- Cans: Feb 26 - March 1
- Pasta: March 4 - March 8
- Cereal: March 11 - March 14
- Rice: March 18 - March 22
All donations can be dropped off in class bins in the Inner Court.
Global Hunger
Carondelet Hunger Banquet
Thursday, March 14 at 1:50 - 3:30 PM, Garaventa
**Students, Faculty, Staff only**
A Hunger Banquet is a volunteer-led interactive event that brings statistics about hunger and famine to life. Guests will randomly receive tickets upon arrival that determine the type of meal they will receive. The tickets represent high-, middle-, or low-income earners around the world, demonstrating that where you end up is all in the luck of the draw. With this event, we hope to increase awareness about global hunger and famine, highlight issues of injustice and provide a space for hearts to be changed.
