Many The Gifts - 2022

Many the Gifts, Carondelet’s annual report, honors our donor community of parents, alumnae, and friends whose philanthropy helps set Carondelet apart. Through your collective generosity and leadership, Carondelet has the resources to help shape the lives of our students on campus and beyond.

Financial Annual Report

The dedicated partnership of our community resulted in yet another phenomenal year. Although challenges and unknowns continued to define the landscape, our students focused on building resiliency, staying informed, embracing change, and leading with heart, faith, courage, and excellence. Your generosity enabled us to enhance our tuition assistance offerings, further leveling the playing field for all young women at Carondelet, and because of your investments, our Student Life, Educational Support, College and Career, and Wellness teams continue to provide essential resources for students’ academic, spiritual, and social-emotional journeys. These are just a handful of the countless resources—staff, classes, programs, supplies, and initiatives—that we provide, thanks to you.

Your philanthropic support, volunteer efforts, and engagement with school life during the 2021-2022 year helped raise $1.2M in contributed income, 119% of our goal. This success was driven by creative fundraising efforts—hybrid events, annual sponsorship opportunities, and targeted initiatives—and this community’s sustained responsiveness to the needs of the times. Our supporters rose to the occasion to keep Carondelet on the cutting edge of whole-person secondary education and used philanthropy to maintain the exceptional experience our students and their families expect and deserve.

This level of contributed income speaks to the collective vote of confidence our community has in our mission and vision. The challenges incumbent in fundraising persist, and we consistently must do more with less. More tax-deductible support is needed today to maintain the programs we have and more is needed to preserve the ambitious trajectory we have established on behalf of our students. We are almost 90% reliant on tuition income, and depend on your continued investment to close this gap each year. Our generous community of donors helps address this shortfall with philanthropic contributions in lieu of tuition increases.

The impact of your giving is demonstrated each day through a variety of experiences and accomplishments. There are many examples that showcase our achievements this past academic year. It’s far from an exhaustive list, as there are simply too many things that happen during the course of a year to spotlight it all. We are proud of our students, faculty, staff, alumnae, and parents and humbled to share the following summary.

Financial Aid

Approximately 45% of Carondelet students received financial aid, including $1.5 million in need-based grants and $350,000 in merit awards.

Academics
Our prized faculty continue to create innovative, interdisciplinary programs that differentiate our graduates from all other high school students. As a college preparatory school, we prepare students for a traditional learning environment where standardized test scores and AP classes are critical to the college admissions process, and offer real-world experiences and critical thinking skills that transcend secondary education.

  • Average class size: 28
  • 16:1 student to faculty ratio
  • 99% of graduates attended college
  • Average AP test score was 6.9% above the national average for all the AP tests taken by Carondelet students combined.
  • Standardized test scores were significantly higher than the national average across the board on both the SAT and ACT.
  • ACT-40.5% above national average in English, 21.2% higher in Math, 37.5% higher in reading, 23.2% higher in Science and 29.5% higher overall
  • SAT-7.3% higher in Math, 12.2% higher in English, and 9.9% higher overall. Though these are traditional measures, they are measures that colleges look at closely.

Carondelet offers no-cost college credit opportunities through our Early College Credit program. Students earn transferable college credits that enhance their college applications and save money when they attend college. More than 600 Carondelet students have earned credit through this program over the past five years, and using the average cost of the colleges our students attend, have saved approximately $936,000 in unit cost over that time period.

The Carondelet College Counseling department provides current information on the changing landscape of college admissions. Our college counselors provide a comprehensive and personalized four-year approach to the college admissions process. This includes a college application boot camp for rising seniors and visits by over 100 colleges to Carondelet to recruit our students. 90% of the Class of 2022 received a merit scholarship to at least one university.

Athletics
Approximately 53% or 424 students participated in Cougar athletics during the 2021-2022 year.

Across all sports, Carondelet had 11 First Team student-athletes, nine Second Team student-athletes, 15 Honorable Mentions, and two Players of the Year in the EBAL All League Selections 2021-2022.

Student Life
Carondelet returned to campus full time, starting the year in masks, and ending the year enjoying almost a full complement of school events and activities. Our students, faculty, and staff enjoyed building community together once again as we returned to in-person liturgies, retreats, dances, club meetings, service immersions, and rallies.

In-person immersion trips began again with a November trip to Washington, D.C. for the Ignatian Family Teach-in. We also returned to the Salinas area for Ven a Ver Fruits of Labor where students learned more about agriculture, farmworkers, and food production. Lastly, a new service immersion trip to Arizona, Ven a Ver Borderlands, in collaboration with the organization Borderlinks occurred in April. This trip focused on immigration, poverty, and included a visit to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Tucson.

Frosh Day of Service was in-person this year. Our frosh students spent time discussing poverty and food insecurity and then packed meals with Kids Against Hunger. This was the first year that freshmen worked on a service project together as a team. It was a bonding experience our students will always remember.

We celebrated liturgies in person again. We started the year with our Welcome to the Sisterhood liturgy celebrated outside in the Amp. Later liturgies were held in our Garaventa Center, bringing back shared prayer and worship traditions such as our liturgical song. We were able to celebrate St. Joseph’s Day in person, welcoming our CSJ Sisters and Associates via Zoom.

Campus Ministry brought back the Junior Shalom overnight retreat. Juniors experienced prayer, community building, and a focus on spiritual practices at the beautiful Redwood Alliance Retreat Center.

In partnership with De La Salle, we brought Junior Prom and Senior Ball back. Held at Saint Mary’s College of California’s Soda Center, both classes danced the night away and enjoyed a variety of food truck offerings for dinner. The Class of 2022 also enjoyed a Senior Celebration on The Hornet. The night of games, dancing, and food provided special memories for our graduates.

Allie Macaulay '15
Empowering a Legacy of Girl Power—Allie Macaulay ’15

Our family was first introduced to Carondelet in 2011, and we were lucky to call it home for more than 11 years. Our daughters Allie ’15, Hannah ’19, and Kelsey ’22 all embraced Carondelet’s Integral Student Outcomes of heart, faith, courage, and excellence and carried them into college and beyond. They all experienced challenges in college and life, and found success in remembering their roots and the sisterhood from their days at Carondelet.
