Children’s Literature invites students to explore the richness, creativity, and complexity of literature written for young readers. The course examines a wide range of texts – including picture books, folk tales, myths, fantasy, and nonfiction – while considering their cultural and historical contexts. Students analyze how stories communicate ideas, shape perspectives, and engage with ambiguity, while developing critical reading, writing, and discussion skills. A central focus of the course is the importance of children’s literacy and how literature can inspire and support young readers. This emphasis culminates in a final project in which students create and present an original work of children’s literature designed to engage and foster a love of reading in a real audience of children.
