Rest in Peace, Sister Eleanor Eagan

It is with a sad heart that we share the news that our beloved Sr. Eleanor Eagan, CSJ has passed on to God. Sr. Eleanor was an integral part of the Carondelet community for more than 30 years and we will honor her work and her impact on generations of young women at a community-wide Celebration of Life here at Carondelet later this summer, after students and teachers return to school in August. Please continue to keep Sr. Eleanor's spirit and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sister Eleanor Eagan, CSJ

May 8, 1929 - June 22, 2017

The following message was shared with us by Sisters Sharon Margaret, Annette, Regina Clare and Alma Gutierrez for the Holy Family Community Life Team

Sister Eleanor Eagan died peacefully this morning at 8:50 a.m. Since Sunday, she has enjoyed the constant presence of her niece Sheila Benson, Sr. Kathy Lang, CSJ and many of her friends here at the Center. She seemed aware of us at the bedside but was unable to converse with us clearly but she did a lot of humming and mumbling – Sheila thought she might be doing creative writing to all of us! She was lovingly supported by the Holy Family Staff and Vitas Hospice throughout her journey with cancer. May she rest now in peace, reunited with so many family and friends.

Ellie asked that we delay her services until the family can participate. Her services will likely be mid-July. Thank you for the many ways you have supported Ellie throughout her illness.

Eleanor Eagan was born in Long Island, New York and carried that history proudly throughout her life. She was the youngest of five children. It was her older sister who suggested naming her after Eleanor Roosevelt.

In 1950, when Ellie informed her family of her upcoming entrance into community, her brother Jack responded, "I think you're a fool but as long as you're going, please try to be a good nun!"

After twenty years teaching and administering in Southern California high schools, Sister began a 35-year career at Carondelet High School.

Sister Eleanor retired in 2016 and joined Holy Family Community in May 2016, bringing with her an immense appreciation for family, friends, former students, CSJ community and all who shared her love for words, her uniquely Eastern perspective and her quirky Eagan humor.

Rest in peace, Ellie! You did it your way!

Sr. Eleanor's funeral Mass in Los Angeles was held on Saturday, July 15 at the Carondelet Center. The mass was livestreamed and can be seen here.
