The Cougars Ali Bamberger (heading to the University of Washington next season) finished 16 points and frustrated the Panthers in the paint. Other players able to work the paint for the Cougars included Alex Brown (University of Michigan for Water-Polo) and Tatyana Modawar (University of Texas, El Paso).Pinewood had trouble guarding Bamberger and Brown, who repeatedly grabbed rebounds and delivered put-backs. Modawar finished with 12 points and hit some crucial shots along with Annie Bonderer in the second half to extend the Cougar lead.
Guards Jayme Blackard and Emily Howie changed the pace of play throughout the game to generate the Cougars offense. The two guards challenged the 3-point shots of the Panthers and quieted the Panther offense. "We gave up 2s and defended against 3s," said Coach Mike Morris. "It was part of our game planning."
The win over Pinewood brings the Cougars to 13-2 for the season. Carondelet has several more games before taking on another national power, Archbishop Mitty, on January 21 at Carondelet. The winner of this game could determine the number one team in the state and a powerful national ranking.
