Concord, Calif. (May 24, 2017) – Carondelet High School recently named Angela (Varian) Schroeter its 2017 Alumna of the Year, recognizing her commitment to living the Carondelet mission.
"She is a woman of heart by doing it relentlessly because of her belief in protecting the voiceless. And she is a woman of faith by believing she was doing the right thing even when she may have questioned it. We are so proud to see her living the Carondelet mission and making meaningful changes in our world," Michelle said.
A member of the Carondelet class of 1988, Angela graduated from UC Davis with a double-major in Geology and Environmental Policy and Analysis. She continued her education at the University of Nevada, Reno, earning a Master's Degree in Hydrogeology and became a groundwater specialist who focuses on environmental justice and helping disadvantaged communities.
Her sister Skye Hayworth '91, who nominated Angela, said her sister is a tireless advocate for those most affected by contaminated groundwater. As a supervising engineering geologist with the State Water Resources Control Board, Angela successfully worked to expand requirements for irrigated agriculture to protect groundwater in the Central Coast area of California from further contamination.
"At the heart of her work lies her truest conviction – that healthy drinking water is a universal right," Skye said.
When she returned to Carondelet on May 15 to receive her award during the senior assembly, Angela addressed the school's 800 students, saying: "I am excited to see so many young women, so capable and full of energy, ready to change the world. Our future is very literally in your hands."
Angela implored students to discover their passions and listen to their faith. "What is God calling you to do?" she asked, adding "work hard, be courageous, and use your talents and skills in service of others who are less fortunate than you."
"Surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable to being your best self," Angela advised. "And never underestimate your ability to make a positive impact and change the world around you!"
"Angela is a beautiful example of the Carondelet mission in action, as well as a role model and inspiration to our current students and her fellow alumnae," said Kathleen Henggeler, Carondelet's Director of Alumnae Engagement.
On top of her stellar resume, Angela is a loving wife to husband, Robert - a De La Salle alum, a devoted mother to Gabriella and Justin, and an active volunteer and leader in her parish. Her niece Mady will be a sophomore at Carondelet next year.
