Vanessa became a teacher after briefly practicing law in San Francisco and quickly discovered a passion for working with young people. She began her career at John O’Connell High School in the Mission District, where she spent several years teaching English and Social Studies and developing expertise in authentic assessment practices, project-based learning, and social-emotional learning to better support her students and the community. Vanessa loves finding ways to help students develop a sense of agency and a practice of reflection about their intellectual and emotional development, as well as helping them to get comfortable taking risks in their learning and celebrating their mistakes as opportunities. Outside of the classroom, she loves spending time with her family, including her spouse and two young children, walking in the hills, digging in the dirt, and messing around with fabric, thread, paper, paint, and words.
