This course will trace the seen and unseen roles of women in Catholicism from its origins in ancient Israel to modern day America. Students will explore women’s contribution to the Catholic Church by first investigating the roles of women in Salvation History through the Old and New Testament. Further topics include a survey of the women Doctors of the Church, a study of women religious including key American nuns and sisters, the effects of Vatican II history and reform, and an examination of the most current discussion of women in the Church that is taking place today. Throughout the course, students will explore both the historical leadership role of women in the Catholic faith and reflect on where they see themselves in the opportunities of the Church today.
