Concord, Calif. – Carondelet High School is proud to announce that three student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play collegiately, beginning with the 2017-18 academic school year. Golfer Alexis Browne '17 has chosen to sign with Lehigh University, softball player Niaja Nolan signed with Howard University and swimmer Delaney Sprague has decided to sign with Xavier University.
Alexis Browne '17 - Golf
Alexis Browne was a four-year letter winner of the Carondelet varsity golf team. She was a member of the 2015 squad that won the East Bay Athletic League and North Coast Section championships, and helped her team advance to the CIF State Championships in 2015 and 2016. Alexis went from a beginning golfer to a competitive golfer in just three years, and has helped the Cougars break a number of league records, while maintaining a grade point average above a 4.0.
"I chose Lehigh because of its amazing academic reputation, and the opportunity to contribute to the Division I team," Alexis said. "I instantly fell in love with the campus, the coach, the practice facilities, and the team culture. After visiting many schools, it became even clearer that Lehigh is the perfect fit for both my academic and athletic goals."
Niaja Nolan '17 - Softball
Niaja Nolan is a natural athlete and picked up her first softball at the age of 13. She has competed for the Concord Lady Hawks and the California Riptide fast pitch teams. In just four short years, she has taken the sport by storm, and is proud to earn a collegiate scholarship in a short period of time, after verbally committing to Howard, her dream school, during her junior year.
"Howard is the number one historically black college in the country, and me choosing a HBCU was the most fulfilling thing I could have ever done," Niaja said. "I wanted a diverse environment where I could see successful, determined, and unique people achieve similar goals to mine, and in the same breath, be able to indulge in my culture. Also, I've always wanted to go far for college and go to the East Coast, and Howard has a great medical program."
Delaney Sprague '17 – Swimming
A member of the Carondelet swimming and diving program for three seasons, Delaney Sprague will move on to Xavier University next year. Delaney achieved Scholastic All-American honors twice and qualified for the Junior Nationals in the 200 breaststroke. Delaney lists her proudest accomplishments to date as balancing school work, volunteering time, her personal life and swimming throughout middle school and high school on a year-round team.
"I chose Xavier University because it is a great fit for me athletically and academically," Delaney said. "Xavier offers me impressive academic courses and professors, a competitive swim program, and a strong sense of community within the campus. I fit in really well with the swim team and the coaches and I know Xavier will lead me to success in and out of the pool!"
